TBF® 300 and TBF® 300S
In addition, BETELGEUX-CHRISTEYNS has developed a range of products specifically designed to detach and degrade the biofilm matrix and eliminate the microorganisms present. The main obstacle to control the presence of biofilms is that they are very difficult to detect. The usual techniques for detecting the presence of biofilms are usually expensive and complex, generally of little use for routine control.
BETELGEUX-CHRISTEYNS offers biofilm detection tests, TBF® 300 and TBF® 300S. These are innovative products that allow you to quickly and easily observe the growth points of biofilms. This product contains agents that selectively stain the protective matrix of biofilms, avoiding false positives due to interference from organic residues or other materials. The residual coloration (magenta colour) after rinsing indicates the possible presence of microbial biofilm.
TBF® 300 is a rapid test for detection of microbial biofilms on surfaces. This product has been deve- loped as a simple and fast technique for the se- lective identification of biofilms, and is the result of several years of research in collaboration with Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain).
TBF® 300 is employed for assessing the presence of biofilms on surfaces after the cleaning and disinfection operations, by its application on several sampling points.
- Select the surface to be analysed and apply TBF® 300 foam over an area of approximately 10 cm2.
- Allow a contact time of at least 5 minutes. 3. Rinse the test area with water to remove the foam.
- Check for the presence of pink coloration remaining on the surface after rinsing.
Remaining pink coloration on the test surface indicates the presence of biofilms. Should this be the case, it is recommended to clean and disinfect the surface using biofilm-removing products.
Do not apply on porous surfaces which may permanently retain the dye (wood, fabric, cardboard, etc.). In case of doubt, apply a small amount of foam on a sample of the surface. The use of gloves during application is recommended to prevent staining the skin, which may be difficult to remove. Rinsing water may contain amounts of dye large enough to stain non-suitable materials. Always check that this water is conducted over non-absorbing materials.
Each can of BIOFILM DETECTION TEST TBF® 300 allows to test around 300 sampling points (150 ml can, 10 cm2 test area). The components of TBF® 300 foam selectively dye the biofilm exopolymeric matrix, without interferences from most residues commonly found in food or cosmetic industries. This test provides qualitative information on the presence of biofilms on surfaces under study, and it does not replace official methods to assess the sanitary conditions of the facilities. It is necessary to use more specific analysis techniques to obtain data regarding the nature of the biofilm, its constituents or microbiological contamina- tion levels.
TBF® 300S is a rapid test for detection of microbial biofilms on surfaces. Biofilm growth spots can be identified selectively in a short time with a simple procedure. TBF® 300S is suitable for routine use in surface hygiene control after cleaning and disinfection procedures. TBF® 300S is available in 100 ml spray bottles for easier application on surfaces.
- Select a test area to sample, representative of the surface to be assessed. An area of at least 10 cm2 on a horizontal surface is recommended for product application.
- Apply TBF® 300S by spraying the product over the sample surface. 3. Allow a minimum contact time of 5 minutes.
- Rinse the surface with water and check the presence of residual staining on the surface. Residual staining (fuchsia) after rinsing shows possible biofilm presence.
TBF® 300S should be applied in small, controlled doses, using protective gloves to avoid contact with the skin. This product should not be applied on porous surfaces that can be irreversibly stained (wood, fabric, carton, etc.). In case of doubt, apply a small amount of product on a test surface and check if the product is rinsed. Rinse waters can contain high amounts of dye and can therefore stain non-compatible surfaces during drainage.
TBF® 300S contains biological dyeing agents selected for their capacity for staining biofilms formed by different bacterial species. Biofilm staining is visible at a glance, no specific equipment or specialized personnel are required. TBF® 300S selectively stains biofilms formed by bacteria such as Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureurs, Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes, among others. Dye components irreversibly stain the biofilm expolymeric matrix, staining is not dependant on the bacterial species in the biofilm. The staining agents in have been tested in the presence of common food residues, in order to prevent undesirable interferences. Food residues such as milk, fat and lean meat are not stained by TBF® 300S. TBF® 300S contains surfactants, thickeners and stabilizers for easier applica- tion of the product and longer retention time on surfaces. TBF® 300S is water soluble, easy to rinse away with water except where biofilm spots have been formed.
