biofilms2-1-1

What is a biofilm?

Biofilms consist of aggregates of microorganisms embedded within a self-produced polymeric matrix which is attached to a surface. The biofilm matrix is composed of extracellular materials like proteins and polysaccharides and it provides stability, nutrients and protection for the microorganisms embedded.

Biofilms support proliferation of microorganisms, providing a protected, humid and nutrient-rich environment for them. Biofilm formation is a survival strategy for microorganisms against external hostile factors such as disinfectants and environmental stresses.
